What is Shamanism?
Shamanism is an umbrella term for a large variety of different practices. The term 'shaman' comes from the Tungusic people of Siberia, and is now used as a catch-all term for anyone who uses ecstatic trance to interact with the spirit world.
Shamanic practitioners can perform a variety of services for their community, and most commonly they are called upon to provide healing or divination. When approached by a client, a practitioner will perform a journey (which means they will enter a trance and interact with the spirit world) to find out what kind of service the client needs. The client can then decide whether they want to go ahead with that service.
Most healings will involve the practitioner undertaking a journey for the client and relating that to the client for the client to interpret. The practitioner cannot heal the client, they can only assist the client in healing themselves. Healings may involve bringing spiritual support to the client, reuniting them with lost parts of themselves, healing ancestral wounds, or removing unloving energy that has become attached to the client.
